Dr. Yoo Soo Hong, former Vice President and a Chaired Research Fellow of the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) is currently the Director and Chief Economist of the Institute for Creative and Innovative Development-World (ICID-World). Dr. Hong served the Korea Small Business Institute as the Research Advisor, and was an Invited Professor of Economic Development and World Regional Economies, at the Graduate School of International Studies of Korea University for 10 years. Concurrently, Dr. Hong also serves as an advisor to the Korea Enterprise Institute.
Dr. Hong‘s main research area involves the Asian economy and industries with a focus on technological innovation policies and strategies. After graduating from Seoul National University, Dr. Hong served as a research associate at the Korea Institute for Science and Technology (KIST) for 10 years. Dr. Hong received his Ph.D. in Economics from Northwestern University in the U.S., and subsequently taught as a visiting professor of economics at Northwestern University, and as an assistant professor of economics at Oklahoma State University. After conducting study and teaching in America for 10 years, Dr. Hong returned to Korea in 1989 to rejoin the KIST, then subsequently served the KIEP. Dr. Hong was with the KIEP for 20 years and participated in numerous projects including those for OECD, ECLAC, APEC, and countless others.
Dr. Hong’s published works include but not limited: A Study on the Establishment of Asian R&D Network (2010), “Science and Technology Competitiveness in Major Asian Regions/Countries” (2009), FTAs and International Competitiveness of SMEs in Korea (2008), Extended Regional IT Strategies in Korea (2006). Although officially retired, Dr. Hong extended his specialized research area to the cultural and creative economy and its growing influence in Asia and beyond.
